Top tips.

Practical selling and planning points for agents building and pitching Southern African safari itineraries.

Match the season to the country, not the trip

Botswana, Zambia and Zimbabwe peak July to October, when the dry winter concentrates game around shrinking water — the premium window, and it books out first. South Africa's Kruger region runs a milder swing, so check the calendar country by country on a combined itinerary.

Flag malaria risk honestly, and offer the malaria-free alternative

Northern Botswana, Kruger, the Lower Zambezi and Victoria Falls all carry malaria risk — manageable with standard prophylaxis. For malaria-averse clients, Welgevonden and other malaria-free reserves in South Africa deliver a genuine Big Five safari without the exposure.

Sell the private vehicle before the thread count

A camp with a private vehicle and dedicated guide will outperform a cheaper camp running shared drives, every time — the sighting runs on your client's schedule, not a group's.

Two to three nights minimum per camp

A one-night stop is a logistics exercise, not a safari experience. Budget at least two nights, three where the itinerary allows, especially at any camp positioned as a highlight.

Charter luggage limits are strict and non-negotiable

Light-aircraft transfers typically cap luggage at 20kg per person, soft-sided bags only — brief clients before they pack, not at the airstrip.

Build the itinerary low-to-high, not high-to-low

Sequence camps from least to most luxurious across the trip so the experience escalates toward a finish. The final camp should be the one clients remember leaving.

Night drives are a genuine differentiator — ask about them

Over 70% of predator activity happens after dark. Government-controlled reserves like Kruger National Park don't permit night drives; private concessions largely do.

Under-12 pricing works differently on the ground than in the air

Most camps discount children under 12 on accommodation, but charters and road transfers price by seat, not age — budget flights at full rate even when the camp rate is discounted.

Vehicle density at a sighting is worth checking in advance

More than three vehicles at one sighting starts to feel like a queue. Private and sole-traversing concessions cap vehicle numbers; government reserves generally don't.

Don't let camp choice outrun guide quality

The lodge can be extraordinary and the safari still fall flat with a mediocre guide, and vice versa. Ask about guide tenure and tracker pairing when quoting a camp.

Pace multi-country itineraries around transfer fatigue, not just novelty

Stringing together Botswana, Victoria Falls and Cape Town in ten days stacks transfer days that eat into camp time. Fewer, longer stops consistently outperform more, shorter ones. Reconfirm border and visa requirements per leg, not once — rules differ across a multi-country route.

Southern Africa fast facts & did you know...

A running set of numbers worth having on hand when a client asks "how big is that, really?"

The KAZA landscape

The Kavango–Zambezi Transfrontier Conservation Area spans roughly 520,000 square kilometres across five countries — the largest conservation area in Africa, and the reason a Botswana, Namibia and Victoria Falls circuit can move through one connected safari region.

Chobe's elephant capital

During the dry season, elephant concentrations on the Chobe Riverfront can number in the hundreds at a single sighting — Africa's densest elephant viewing by boat.

Kruger, end to end

Kruger National Park stretches roughly 350km north to south — baobab and mopane country in the far north, granite hills and dense bushveld in the south.

The Sabi Sand's biodiversity checklist

330+ tree species, 500+ bird species and 145+ mammal species recorded across the reserve's 65,000 hectares.

Namib-Naukluft, by the numbers

Africa's largest game park and the world's fourth-largest national park, at 49,768 square kilometres — encompassing 1,609km of Atlantic shoreline.

Hwange's elephant herds

Up to 30,000 elephant move through Hwange National Park — one of the largest concentrations anywhere in the world.

A predator's clock

Over 70% of predator activity happens after dark — one reason a night-drive permit is worth checking before promising a client leopard or lion action.

The Okavango's paradox

The Delta's annual flood arrives during Botswana's dry season — water reaching the wilderness exactly when the surrounding country is at its driest.
