Pondoro Game Lodge sits on the banks of the Olifants River — the largest perennial river in Kruger National Park — within the Balule Nature Reserve, part of the unfenced Greater Kruger system. The lodge has been founded and owner-managed by Robbie and Lize Prehn since 1997; Robbie has more than 20 years' experience as a professional guide, and the lodge has won several industry awards including "Best Luxury Safari Retreat" (Global Winner) at the 2021 World Luxury Hotel Awards.

Accommodation comprises just 8 rooms across two categories: 5 Suites (Water, Buffalo, Earth, Tree and Rock, each with a private patio, lounge, outdoor shower and a heated plunge pool built into the deck) and 3 river-facing Chalets (Hardekool, Wildevy and Maroela, each with an en-suite bath/shower, air-conditioning and mosquito nets). Facilities include a dining deck set high in the tree canopy overlooking the river, an extensive wine cellar, a spa, a small gym, a telescope for stargazing and free WiFi. Stays include two daily game drives in open vehicles (maximum 6 guests per vehicle) and one guided nature walk with armed trackers; optional extras include an overnight stay at the Treehouse Hide overlooking a spotlit waterhole (from R4,500/night) and a Black Mamba Anti-Poaching Tour (R1,400pp), supporting the all-woman Black Mamba anti-poaching unit that Pondoro partners with. No children under 12 are accepted.

Pondoro is rated 4.9 of 5 on TripAdvisor from 1,111 reviews, ranked #4 of 14 specialty lodging in the Balule Nature Reserve, and holds a 2026 Travelers' Choice badge. Guests consistently praise river-view rooms with private plunge pools, exceptional food, named guide/tracker teams and up-close Big Five sightings directly from the rooms and decks. Worth flagging: a July 2026 guest review references the lodge having recently reopened after "a destructive flood in early 2026" — current facility condition and full reopening status should be confirmed directly with the lodge before client-facing use.
