Lions Place
Lions Place is a very small, owner-run lodge in the Grietjie Nature Reserve, part of the Balule area near Phalaborwa, in a Big Five reserve bordering Kruger National Park. The property takes only four guests at a time, split between a Queen Room for two and a Family Room for up to four, both with air conditioning, tea and coffee facilities, Wi-Fi and private decks overlooking a waterhole.
Game drives run into the lodge's private section of Kruger along the Olifants River, hosted in English or French, with safari packages bundling meals with morning and sunset drives. The owners — JP, who guides, and Danielle, who cooks French and South African cuisine — give the lodge an intimate, personal feel. A swimming pool, game-viewing tower, viewing deck and secure parking are on site, and breakfast is included with dinners at local restaurants on some packages. The area is reached via Phalaborwa or Hoedspruit, with an unpaved final approach road.
