Opened in 2024, Mokete is the newest and most remote camp in the Wilderness Botswana portfolio and the only permanent tourism camp in the Mababe Depression — a vast grassland region between Chobe National Park and Moremi Game Reserve, fed by the perennial Mababe River and linked onward to the Linyanti via the Savuti Channel. The land was historically a hunting concession, now reclaimed for low-impact photographic tourism, and with no prior permanent camps, wildlife here is less habituated to vehicles — sightings have a rawer, more unpredictable character than the established Okavango or Linyanti circuits.

The camp's architecture matches its "as wild as it gets" positioning: nine climate-controlled tents with cantilevered canvas roofs that slide open to the sky, kept intentionally minimalist to limit environmental impact. A sunken hide overlooks the permanent marsh — one of the area's only dry-season water sources, drawing mega-herds of elephant and buffalo, large lion prides and a notably high density of hyena — and some suites include private plunge pools alongside a central pool.

Activities run on flexible timing rather than a fixed schedule: guests can spend a full day following a specific pride, take bush lunches out on the plains, or go out after dark when hyena activity peaks, supplemented by guided walking safaris and strong raptor and bird populations. There are no water-based activities here — the marsh is too shallow and dangerous for boating or mokoro — so Wilderness positions Mokete as a complementary add-on to an Okavango Delta or Linyanti stay.

Rooms: 9 climate-controlled tents (some with private plunge pools). Max guests: 18. Children 6 years and older. Facilities: central pool, sunken wildlife hide over the marsh, plunge pools (select suites), in-room inverter A/C. 100% solar-powered. Opened 2024; recognised by Condé Nast Traveller and Architectural Digest.
