Maxa

Maxa sits beneath towering ebony trees overlooking the permanent, hippo-frequented Maxa Lagoon, in a remote and rarely explored corner of the north-eastern Delta near the source of the Selinda Spillway, within the vast KAZA Transfrontier Conservation Area. Opened 20 March 2025, the camp leans into an "exploration and learning" philosophy rather than a heavily trafficked safari circuit.

The design is a freeform, partially open-air main area — a lounge and dining space under light canvas roofing, sections enclosed by traditional clay walls and furnished with handmade local pieces. A sandy central courtyard sits between the lounge and dining areas, anchored by a termite mound (the island's original nucleus) that now doubles as a wood-fired oven for fresh bread. A separate riverine-forest nook with a shaded sala, day bed and hammock deck gives a quiet lagoon-view retreat. Accommodation is four stretch-canvas tents on decks (each with indoor and full outdoor bathrooms) plus a two-bedroom family tent.

Days are built around varied exploration — mokoro paddling, walking safaris with armed guides, and day/night vehicle drives — combined with cultural insight into the region's natural heritage, reflecting a camp built for active immersion rather than passive game-drive viewing alone.
