The Kalahari

A different side of Botswana: vast open landscapes, seasonal grasslands and desert-adapted wildlife, from the original wilderness of the Central Kalahari Game Reserve to the more exclusive private concessions to its north.

Two Kalahari regions

Central Kalahari Region — the original Kalahari wilderness

One of the world's great wilderness areas, the Central Kalahari Game Reserve spans an enormous tract of semi-arid savannah, grassland, pans and fossil river systems. Despite its desert reputation, good rains turn the Kalahari surprisingly green and productive, drawing lion, cheetah, leopard, brown hyena, gemsbok, springbok and giraffe — alongside remarkable adaptations in both wildlife and people. Cultural encounters with San communities offer insight into one of the world's oldest hunter-gatherer cultures.

Northern Central Kalahari — private reserves

North of the main Central Kalahari Game Reserve, a cluster of private concessions offers a more exclusive take on the Kalahari, pairing the region's enormous open landscapes with private-sector safari operations that enable activities often restricted in national parks — off-road game viewing, night drives, walking and highly personalised guiding.
